Nobex vs AzuraCast: managed radio or your own server?
AzuraCast is excellent free, open-source radio software you run yourself; Nobex is a managed platform from $19 a month. An honest comparison of what each costs in money and hours, what you get, and who should pick which.
The short answer: AzuraCast is some of the best free software in internet radio, and if you are comfortable running a server — and enjoy it — it is hard to beat on price and control. Nobex is the managed alternative: from $19 a month (September 2026) for a station somebody else keeps running, with adaptive HLS over a CDN, one-tap live from a phone and a directory listing included. This is not a question of which software is better. It is a question of who does the operations.

2. What self-hosting really costs
The software costs nothing. Keeping a public station on air around the clock costs something — and most of it is paid in hours rather than dollars, which is why it rarely shows up in comparisons. Here is the list, honestly.
- The server. A VPS big enough for transcoding and your library, plus bandwidth that grows with every hour people listen. The AzuraCast project points to one-click installs on Linode, DigitalOcean and Vultr.
- Maintenance hours. Docker images, operating-system patches, TLS certificates that must never silently expire, and backups you have actually tested restoring.
- Updates. Usually painless, occasionally a migration that needs reading about first. Either way, someone has to schedule them.
- Uptime. A stream server fails silently — the failure is dead air, and dead air pages nobody. You need monitoring that is not you listening.
- CDN and HLS delivery. One box has a ceiling. Past it you need relays or a CDN, and adaptive HLS for phones on patchy mobile data is a project of its own.
- Going live from a phone. Possible with a third-party encoder app, but not the one-tap, AutoDJ-resumes-on-drop flow that managed platforms built for it.
The honest arithmetic
Count the hours you spent on the server last quarter and put any price on them. If the total is close to a subscription, and you enjoyed those hours, keep self-hosting — that is a perfectly good reason. If you did not enjoy them, the software was never the expensive part.
3. Where AzuraCast is the better pick
- It is free, and honestly free. Open source, no seat counting, no upsell ladder, no vendor setting your price next year.
- Total control. Your server, your data, your configuration. Nobody can change the terms underneath you.
- It scales as far as your infrastructure does. More stations, bigger boxes, relays — the ceiling is your budget and skill, not a plan.
- No listening-hour meter. You pay for the bandwidth you use instead of a plan’s monthly pool.
- A real community. Active development, helpful users, and documentation written by people who run it.
- It is a complete platform. Library, scheduling, live DJ handover, web player, stats and an API — not a stream server with a panel bolted on.

6. Moving from AzuraCast to Nobex
- 1Export the library with its tags. The artist and title metadata you kept in AzuraCast is what makes rotation rules and royalty reports work, so carry it across carefully.
- 2Build the new station in free test mode — no card needed, and your server keeps broadcasting meanwhile.
- 3Rebuild the rotation deliberately. Playlists and schedules do not port between systems; treat it as a chance to fix what you settled for. See rule-based rotation.
- 4Repoint any encoder to Nobex’s standard Icecast source settings — host, port, mount, username and password — with the codec and bitrate matching the mount.
- 5Update every place your stream URL appears, keep the old server running during the overlap, and decommission it once the last listing has moved.

Is Nobex or AzuraCast better?
Neither is better in general; they suit different people. AzuraCast is excellent free, open-source software for broadcasters who are comfortable running and maintaining their own server. Nobex is a managed platform from $19 a month (September 2026) for broadcasters who would rather not run a server, and it adds one-tap live from a phone, adaptive HLS over a CDN and a directory listing.
Is AzuraCast really free?
The software is free and open source. Running it is not: you pay for a server and the bandwidth your listeners use, and you spend time on updates, TLS certificates, backups and monitoring. Managed AzuraCast is also sold by resellers, from about $2.95 a month for 10 listeners as of September 2026.
Is self-hosting AzuraCast cheaper than Nobex?
On the monthly bill, usually yes. Once you count the hours spent keeping a public station on air — updates, certificates, backups, monitoring and fixing outages — it often is not. Self-host if running servers is part of the fun; otherwise a managed platform turns those hours into one predictable line item.
Can I go live from my phone with AzuraCast?
Not in one tap out of the box; a DJ connects to AzuraCast with an encoder, which on a phone means a third-party encoder app. Nobex has its own free Broadcaster app for iOS and Android that goes live in one tap, with AutoDJ taking over if the connection drops.
Does AzuraCast or Nobex include music licensing?
Neither does. With both, the broadcaster licenses the music in their own name — in the US, SoundExchange plus ASCAP, BMI and SESAC — and that licence travels with the station to any host. Nobex helps by enforcing the US performance complement in AutoDJ and producing a royalty usage report.
Can I move my AzuraCast station to Nobex?
Yes. Export your tagged library, build the station in Nobex’s free test mode, rebuild playlists and schedules, and repoint any Icecast encoder. Then update every directory listing, embedded player and shared link that points at your old stream URL, keeping your server running until the last one has moved.
